Sustainability when Resource management has Stochastic Consequences
نویسنده
چکیده
Sustainability is usually defmed as a requirement to each generation to manage the resource base such that the average quality of life that it ensures itself can be shared by all future generations. When the consequences of each generation's management of the resource base are not deterministic, this definition can, however, not be used. The purpose of this note is to present a characterization of the usual definition of sustainability that can be extended to, and hence provides a definition in, the case with risk. The properties of this proposed definition in the case with risk are investigated. Project scheduling is the part of project management that deals with determining when intime to start (and finish) which activities and with the allocation of scarce resources to theproject activities. In practice, virtually all project managers are confronted with resourcescarceness. In such cases, the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP)arises. This optimization problem has...

متن کاملResource management cycles and the sustainability of harvested wildlife populations.
Constant harvest policies for fish and wildlife populations can lead to population collapse in the face of stochastic variation in population growth rates. Here, we show that weak compensatory response by resource users or managers to changing levels of resource abundance can readily induce harvest cycles that accentuate the risk of catastrophic population collapse. Dynamic system models incorp...
